What started as a GroupMe amongst colleagues discussing the lack of diversity in design evolved into a concerted effort to build community and share resources amongst Black designers. The overarching goal is to create a space for creative minds to meet once a year and foster industry connections.

The challenge was to create an in-person event that provided a pathway for development within the design industry. As a group, we realized shared stressors in our workplaces and careers. We attempted to develop a safe space for candid conversations and frameworks that fostered authentic fellowship.

I provided the brand naming for the project and spearheaded the event management since the Fall of 2016.

Due to COVID, our team pivoted the physical summit to a virtual experience via Hopin.com. This task required us to leverage production, marketing, and planning platforms. Utilizing Airtable, Hootsuite, Notion, Trello, and Canva, I managed the project from start to finish.

To develop a virtual experience that mirrored the physical summit as much as possible, we selected Hopin.com as the event platform for 2020. I managed coordinating content for registration, sponsor booths, and breakout networking sessions.

The project has grown exponentially with each presentation with online recognition in Revision Path, Print Magazine, and AIGA. This July, we’ll commemorate the summit by celebrating 5 years of our volunteering efforts. To view the virtual production in its entirety, visit vimeo.com/huecollective.
